4 TIPS ON HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

Whether you’re starting a new business or are already established and surrounded by a team, it’s easy to fall into not prioritising your mental health.  Here I share with you some approaches you can take to help you to thrive.

Running your own business can be very rewarding, giving you freedom, flexibility, creativity, personal satisfaction, and can really pay off in the long term.  It also takes lots of determination, hard work and plenty of learning along the way. When running your own business there is a temptation to work 24/7. It can bring feelings of loneliness, along with pressures to be successful and unable to manage external factors.  Eventually working so hard to the point of burnout. With the charity MIND reporting that ‘every year 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem’, now is more important than ever to make sure you know how to support your mental health.

Approaches to help you do this;

Create A Work/Life Balance

  • Establish your working environment and set boundaries that work for you.  Be mindful, exercise, eat healthy, and get plenty of sleep. Take regular 5-10minute breaks from work, hydrate and stretch during this time.

  • Have positive experiences, a hobby, socialise with friends and family.

  • Implement a morning and evening routine.  There are many books, podcasts and resources available on how to do this.

  • Remember if you don’t run the day, the day will run you.

Avoid Unhealthy Comparison

  • Awareness is key here.  Become aware of this and your triggers, and  instead focus on your strengths and learn to be ok with imperfections.  There are so many books, podcasts and resources for self-help out there.

  • Remember “You are enough.”

Create A Support Network

  • Gain a support network where you can connect with others, ask questions, meet up and share experiences.  Get Lit Inc provides a great community for wellness entrepreneurs.

  • Remember “if you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together.”

Know when to ask for help

  • It’s ok to ask for help when you need it.

  • Remember you can always reach out to MIND, SAMARITANS, SANE, CALM and many more.

Turning new habits into successful routines and having healthy connections will support you both personally and in business.  Remember the saying ‘Health is Wealth’.
